Unattended installation is a process of installing software without need of user input. Basically it gets rid of stupid next-next-next-finish we all know and hate.

Silent installation is basically unattended installation that doesn’t display anything. It is better for background installs over network and such. For personal purposes it equals unattended one.

I am more used to term silent (and it is shorter to type) so I will stick with it.

To launch silent installs in most cases means addition of command line switches to setup executable. With classic being:

Using such types of installation saves many clicks and even more time because you can queue multiply installs instead of waiting for one to finish to start another.

Unattended installations go hand in hand with complex obscure deployments tools and whole scripting languages (AutoIt was originally tool developed for this). This was what I fumbled with in early attempts and frankly I am glad things moved on to the point where we can get benefits of silent installs in simpler ways.

Nowadays most of software use common third party installers, which mostly come with their own silent switches. Portable is on the rise as well and while it lacks installation itself it is as easy to deploy.

Mainstream bulk packages had recently got some press. As for me they will be plagued by some distribution issues that kill most of portable bundles and if apps you need aren’t included that makes bundle useless overall.

Knowledge repositories

While software docs and site are natural first step, in many cases silent routines are poorly documented.

Many projects (mostly offering abovementioned bulky tools :) manage repositories of information on silent installs for software. Those I found most useful:

AppDeploy.com Package Knowledge Base – very extensive and thorough;
WPKG Silent Installers Category – what it has is actually XML configuration files, but they contain command line switches needed;
Appsnap’s database – large INI file that has switches for many apps;
MSFN Application Installs – forum on topic that is good place to dig in more obscure cases.

Figure out installers

If there is no readily available information you can try to figure out type of installer used and look up generic switches for it.

You can try TrID or simply file properties (Alt+Enter on file):

“Install” portable

Portable may actually have first launch install routine, but mostly it doesn’t bother – and that’s the point. Some people find a flaw in lack of installation and un-installation functions, as for me it is easily remedied.

Un-installation is easy – just delete folder. :)

As for installation – if you have archive it is always easy to unpack it. It will require command line as well, but only as much as more complex silent installs. This method is also suitable for installers that are actually simple self-extracting archives.

Manage and update setup packages

I had previously covered Ketarin, which is excellent tool to keep setup packages updated. It allows to keep your own repository and minimize overhead of dealing with updates.

For local usage you can also make it perform automated silent install when packages are updated. You can set variables (such as path to 7-Zip) and combine with native ones (like {file} for current package) to use in command that is run after update detected and downloaded.

Deploy setup packages

Copy/paste is not too shabby. :) Still my setup packages organization tries to minimize number of folders, so getting just right set of files to copy got tedious.

It copies over core packages. Some as portable folder, some as install executable and some are unpacked on the fly. Packages that are changed often are described with masks, so they script doesn’t need to be updated each time.

Bulk installation

Now that packages are neatly stacked in local folder it is just one more script to install them in bulk.

It doesn’t make effort to use silent keys, only unattended so progress is visible. For apps, that try to reboot computer when done, there are keys that suppress reboot. There is only single explicit reboot in the end for freshly installed stuff to settle in.

Such routine will not handle precise details (like file associations) but as for me those take unreasonable time to setup and manage. Who knows, maybe in few more years. :)

Overall

While there are powerful and complex deployment tools for large scale, they are overkill for more personal level. On other hand even with basic tools and minimal amount of scripting it is possible to greatly streamlinesoftware updatesand installations.

What Is FreeMcBoot (aka FMCB)?

Once you have this mod installed on your memory card, and insert that memory card into your PS2 you can start installing homebrew programs, and unleash the true potential of your PS2. Once you insert a PS2 memory card with free mcboot on it the PS2 will load a different menu than it normally does. This menu can be configured to load all kinds of different software, but basically it lets you run homebrew, emulators, backup loaders, graphics upscalers, and other stuff.

Is It Permanent?

No. FreeMcBoot is installed onto a standard PS2 memory card. When this memory card is plugged into your PS2, then your PS2 boots into the FMCB homescreen, and is functionally 'modded.' As soon as you remove this memory card, and reboot your PS2, it is 100% completely reverted back to stock. All the 'magic' happens int he PS2's memory so nothing about it is permanent. Advanced users can even install FreeMcBoot onto the internal hard drive of a PS2 Fat, but even this can be undone by removing or reformatting the hard drive. Nothing about FreeMcBoot is permanent.

Will It work with my PS2?

Free Mcboot will work with almost any PS2. The only versions of the PS2 that will not work are the slim models with a model number series of 9xxxx. These are the models on which 1/2 of the top is shiny. If you have a Fat PS2, or a slim that just has a 1 inch wide 'band' of shiny plastic on the top, then you can use FMCB

How Do I get my PS2 working with FreeMcBoot?

There are a couple of ways you can go about it. Some easy, some hard.

• Easy: Buy a memory card that is preloaded with FMCB already. These can be purchased via /r/PS2's Sidebar. This will cost you a few dollars, but keep in mind you are paying for the convenience, the cost of shipping, and the cost of the card itself, not for FMCB. FreeMcBoot is available from HERE for free.

• Hard: Physically modify your PS2 in order to trick it into reading a burned DVD which has ben prepared to install FMCB onto your memory card. Guides for your specific type of PS2 can be found via /r/PS2's Sidebar.' This method is completely free, but significantly more difficult. That is the tradeoff. If you buy (or otherwise aquire) a memory card with FreeMcBoot installed on it, you will not have to open your PS2 at all.

Can I play backup copies of my PS2 games?

Yes. FreeMcBoot allows you to load backup copies of your games in numerous ways. You can burn backups to DVD, on a Windows or Macintosh computer, by simply patching them using the ESR GUI tool. This is a one-click program that makes your backup files work with FreeMcBoot, and is available for Windows and Macintosh. What a time to be alive! Advanced Users can also use software called OPL to load PS2 .ISO files from a folder right on their PC, via ethernet cable. Advanced users with Fat PS2s and internal hard drives can even rip their discs to the hard drive using software called HDL, and load them via OPL without even having the disc in the drive.

Can I play backup copies of my PS1 games?

Yes. sort of. How easy it is to do this depends on which model of PS2 you have. If you have a Fat PS2 it is very difficult. If you have slim PS2, it is slightly less difficult. Can I Install A Dual Fuel Cooker Myself
It is difficult to give specific advice about positioning range cookers, as this will always vary according to the product and the manufacturer. There are some basic rules (proximity to walls and windows, positioning of switches, etc.) about which we can offer general advice, but the best way is to obtain in advance a copy of your product's manual, which you can often download from the brand's own website.
Alternatively, usethese phone numbersto contact the manufacturer, or just call our team for advice.
Will it fit the gap?
One query we often hear concerns the gap one should leave either side of your cooker. The first thing to know is the exact size of the cooker, and these are usually 5mm or so under the nominal width, so if your space is actually 1000mm wide your 995mm range will obvously slide in nice and snugly, and this is all the space you need. Modern cookers are very well insulated so you do not need a large side-gap, unless perhaps you are positioning next to a refrigerator or wine cooler.
However, some range cookers (e.g. Stoves Sterling) do need a greater gap due to other factors like handle clearance, so it is always best to check with us or the product manual to be sure.
We often hear from customers who are replacing an older cooker which has a very particular width (102cm, 98cm etc) for which there is no direct modern replacement. Leaving aside the annoyance that manufacturers should build to these peculiar widths, there is no simple solution to this other than to replace with the next size down, although this will of course result in an unsightly gap either side of your cooker. These odd sizes are rare but we suggest you bear this in mind before you purchase, as although the prospect of replacement may seem distant it will happen one day, and at a point when you may not want to re-do the whole kitchen or re-size your granite worktops!
Future-proofing
If you are having to re-wire, or are installing a completely new kitchen, we do recommend that you install a 45amp cooker circuit, even if you only need a 32amp currently. This will ensure that should you or a future occupant wish to install an all-electric range (an increasingly popular format) then everything is there and ready.
When researching buying a range cooker, either for the first time or to replace an existing, there are many stages of the process to consider and questions you should ask yourself. Where to buy it from, who can offer me the best and most comprehensive advice, who will install it for me, what shall I do with my old one???

With a huge number of brands and models to choose from, all with different styles, layouts and fuel types, deciding which one you should go for doesn’t have to a painful process. In fact, we think quite the opposite!
Different Fuel Formats, Different Needs

Installing any one of the three major fuel types of cookers that we sell, All Gas, Dual Fuel and All Electric will result in different advice given. Almost every customer we speak to will have their own unique situation, from maximum electrical capacity or minimum, a main gas supply into the property or LPG, or none at all. The space to fit the cooker into will of course vary, and there may be the question of changing or sticking with your existing fuel type. Not to mention that each and every customer has their own personal taste, which differs in so many ways!
Technical Considerations

Fuel choice really boils down to personal preference, but our sales statistics tell us that Dual Fuel cookers (Gas hob/Electric ovens) are still the most popular, followed by All Electric (with the rise of the Induction hob) and lastly All Gas (still hugely popular with the replacement market). Each fuel type has it’s own requirements when it comes to Installation, the below table shows for the most part and bar the odd exception what you will need in place. Since the introduction of Induction range cookers the performance of electric hob cooking has moved dramatically forward, bringing it up to a level that previously only gas hobs have been able to reach. Weather it be the easily cleanable, clean lines and controllability of an All Electric or the ever popular tactile cooking experience of gas that you choose, you can be sure that Rangecookers.co.uk will be right behind you every step of the way.

General Installation Regulations

When installing a range cooker for the first time things are made quite a bit more straightforward, you just need to choose which fuel type is right for you and prepare the space ready for it to be installed. This can be done by a local engineer (Gas Safe Register engineer and/or an Electrician) or alternatively the preparation will be dealt with by the kitchen fitter themselves.
General guidance based on regulations. It is also necessary to anchor your cooker to the wall with an anti-tip chain.

Manufacturer Installation Services and Limitations

For customers replacing existing range cookers we have the additional services offered by the relevant manufacturers. Installation and Removal services are very popular and can be added at point of order to all range cookers where available from the Associated Appliances tab located under most products on the website. These are always limited to the cooker itself, and hoods are never part of the installation service.
Whilst these can be wonderfully convenient and often a preference for a lot of our customers it is worth noting that the manufacturers always offer more of what could be described as a connection service rather than a full installation. For example the Gas Safe regulations (formally Corgi) are constantly evolving and if replacing an old cooker that has been in-situ for a number of years, you may find that the services i.e. gas pipework and connections may be out of date thus requiring modernisation and adjustment before a new range cooker can be installed. I recently got a new laptop and had to go through the ritual of reinstalling all my programs and drivers. I sometimes work with SSIS locally to import data from Excel and occasionally do demos with Power BI where I read from an Access database so I needed to install the ACE OLE DB provider. If you try to do either of those things without the ACE OLE DB provider you will get a message like the one below.
The ‘Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0’ provider is not registered on the local machine.
I needed both the 32-bit and the 64-bit adapters to cover my various use cases. I started by installing the 64-bit Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable. If you have ever attempted this, you know there is a secret. You cannot install the 2010 Access database engine with a different processing architecture (bittedness) from your Office install (or install both versions of the 2010 Access database engine) without a workaround. If you try, you will get an error message.
There are two options for getting the other version installed.
Option A: Install the 2007 Office System Driver: Data Connectivity Components
The 2007 Access database engine can read the same format, but didn’t have a 64-bit install. It doesn’t have the check to see what other products are on your machine and can co-exist peacefully with the 64-bit 2010 Access engine.

This procedure lets you install Windows XP OS on a netbook or on a PC that may not have a working CD/DVD drive. Yet, in order to prepare the bootable USB, you need a computer with a CD/DVD drive support and Windows XP installation disk.
When you insert the WIndows XP bootable installation disk into the CD/DVD ROM and restart your computer, you find a screen along with the following message: “Press any key to boot from CD…”. You get this message as the inserted CD or DVD is a bootable one. When you copy every file of the installer CD and paste it to a USB drive, and then restart your PC, the same thing does not happen to you. You need to make the USB drive bootable and as Microsoft’s USB/DVD tool does not support Windows XP, so, things become a little trickier for you. A free tool “Win to Flash” can be used to transfer bootable Windows XP installation files to a USB flash/pen drive.
There are another few market available apps to create a bootable USB (I also discuss about them in the later part), the latest version of “WinToFlash” is very appropriate for creating Windows XP USB. The free app also supports the creation of Windows 7,8.8.1 and Windows 10 bootable USB.
Now, let me discuss the best way to set up a bootable USB for Windows XP step by step.
Create Bootable USB and Install Windows XP from USB on a PC or Notebook
To install Windows XP operating system on a Windows PC, you have to follow the below steps.
Preparing a USB thumb drive to create a bootable USB flash drive.
Setting up the BIOS configuration of your PC to install Windows XP using the USB disk.
Install and run Windows XP from USB.
Handling with errors during Windows XP installation.
Step #1: Prepare Your USB Thumb Drive to Create Bootable USB Drive
Requirements:
USB 2.0 (Minimum 2gb drive space)
Windows XP bootable installation CD/DVD or ISO
WinToFlash (download link) free app
Now, follow the below guidelines so that you can easily create a USB flash drive for Windows XP installation.
First, download the ‘WinToFlash‘ from the above link. The portable edition of this tool does not require any installation.
Just open the app and select the ‘Advanced Mode‘. Under ‘Task‘ option, just select “Transfer Windows XP setup to USB drive“. See the screenshot below.
Click ‘Create‘ button to go to the next window.
Tick the “Use my ISO, RAR, ARJ, ZIP, 7Z, CAB, DMG image or archive” option.
Select Windows source path then.
Then, under USB drive, select ‘Refresh‘ button to get the list of all USB drives attached to your PC. Select the USB from the drop-down that you prefer to create bootable USB for Windows PC.
Tick the option which says – “Remove the read-only attributes from files“.
Under ‘process steps‘ tick the following options: format drive, collect information of text mode, collect information of GUI mode, create folders structure, copy files, install boot, assign a drive letter for set up, create answers file, add additions files for installation process, check the USB drive for errors, transfer all folders from original image.
Go to ‘boot loader‘ navigation menu and choose ‘GRUB’ boot loader from boot loader option.
Click ‘Run‘ button and wait until the bootable copy of Windows XP operating system is created on the USB flash drive.
After successful completion, safely remove the USB drive from the PC.

After successfully creating a bootable USB drive, insert the USB to the PC in which you want to install the OS. Then restart your PC and keep pressing Del/F2/Esc key to enter Bios mode. The key may vary due to different motherboard configuration.
Enter in the BIOS setting page and navigate to the boot menu. Change the boot preference there. Select ‘Removable disk’ as first boot device.
Press F10 to save the set up and exit.
Restart the PC once again and when you get the option “Press any key to boot from USB/CD…“, just hit any key to install Windows XP to that PC from USB device.

Before installing Windows XP on your PC, you need to create new partition on your Windows hard drive or you need to edit the existing partition table.
